Sustainably temporary

Provisional and temporary structures have served a variety of purposes throughout the history of theatre. They have been used as stages for medieval travelling troupes, as wooden theatres in Renaissance palaces, and as temporary structures for many theatres that burned down in the 19th century. The completed Temporary Building for the Zurich Opera House, published in ‘TEC21’ issue 8/2025, makes it possible to solve the most acute space shortages in everyday life even before the planned extension. For a maximum of 15 years, it forms a roof over the opera house’s administrative building before being given a new use.
